Phonon releases small on-device speech models with downloadable weights
Gradium moved Phonon from a private beta to downloadable 31M and 40M speech models with inference code.
Why it matters
Small local speech models can support spoken interfaces without a network request for each utterance.
What to watch
Independent device tests, pronunciation failures and clarified commercial terms for multilingual variants.
Still uncertain. Publisher measurements were not reproduced. Commercial permissions differ between the English 31M and 40M variants.
Impact assessment reviewed 2026-10-28.
- Who it helps
- Developers adding spoken output to offline or latency-sensitive applications.
- Availability
- The October 20 release provides English 31M weights under Apache 2.0. The 40M variants use CC BY-NC 4.0; commercial use requires separate terms.
Speech from supplied text
Text-to-speech turns written input into audio. Phonon alone does not translate a conversation or transcribe a microphone. The release includes inference code and downloadable weights.
Check the intended device
The publisher reports low startup latency on selected hardware. Test your own device with dates, abbreviations and numbers, and record both startup delay and audible errors before choosing a model.

Where the evidence stops
Performance and quality claims were not reproduced. Model licensing differs by variant; offline speech output does not make surrounding cloud services local.
