New paid Gemini API projects change their default request storage
Google changed the default for Generate Content request storage in newly created paid projects to store=true; older projects retain existing settings.
Why it matters
A newly created project can handle prompt and response storage differently from an older project running similar code.
What to watch
Watch SDK compatibility, project defaults and further documentation changes before migrating workloads.
Still uncertain. The review checked public documentation only; no account setting or end-to-end retention behavior was tested.

- Who it helps
- Developers and teams choosing how API prompts and responses are stored.
- Availability
- Google’s October 26 change applies to new projects. Older projects keep their existing setting. Request-level configuration needs a supported SDK version.
Check which project you use
The changelog distinguishes new projects from existing ones. Generate Content, streaming and batch requests are covered. Teams should record the project creation context before assuming that a previous default still applies.
An explicit request setting
The logging guide says request-level store overrides the project default. For Python, setting config={"store": False} requires google-genai 2.33.0 or later; the guide lists separate minimum versions for other SDKs.
What you can do
- Read the logging guide and compare your SDK version, project setting and explicit request configuration before sending real records. Open reference ↗
Where the evidence stops
No API request or account setting was tested. Logging controls alone do not establish every data-retention or contractual property.
Sources read. Public sources checked October 28, 2026. No software installation, inference or complete workflow was executed.
