- Who it helps
- Linux users comparing local transcription workflows for lectures or recordings.
- Availability
- The public documentation uses a PulseAudio or PipeWire monitor with FFmpeg and offers three Whisper backend options. macOS support was not established.
Follow the audio route
System audio capture differs from recording a microphone. The selected monitor must carry the application’s playback; otherwise a transcript can be empty even while sound is audible.
Judge a short sample first
Use a recording with a known sentence, a proper name and a pause. Check omissions and name spelling before relying on a longer transcript. Confirm where the selected backend processes and stores audio.
What you can do
- Read the backend and audio-routing requirements, then choose a short recording you have permission to process. Open reference ↗
Where the evidence stops
Capture, transcription accuracy and installation were not tested. A backend choice does not itself establish confidentiality.

The record over time (1)
Dated source checks and published explanations. An observation date can differ from the original release date.
sys2txt captures audio playing on a Linux computer and sends it through a configured Whisper transcription backend. It is useful for making a searchable record of material you are allowed to record.
