GitHub offers voluntary enterprise Copilot access with separately metered usage
Account-managed enterprises can request a billing model with no extra Copilot seat fee for Enterprise Cloud users and no included usage allowance.
Why it matters
Organizations must compare total consumption and seat charges together; removing a seat fee alone does not establish savings.
What to watch
Self-serve rollout dates, usage-based costs and the effect of enterprise spending controls.
Still uncertain. Eligibility is limited and account terms vary. No customer bill or migration was tested.
Impact assessment reviewed 2026-10-29.
- Who it helps
- Enterprise administrators comparing seat costs and model usage.
- Availability
- Available from October 28 through GitHub or Microsoft account teams. Self-serve customers, Free and Team organizations and self-service trials are not yet eligible.
A lower seat charge changes the allowance
Enterprise Cloud license holders have no additional Copilot seat charge. Other users cost $10 per month for Standalone. Neither option includes a usage allowance, so total cost depends on metered use.
The transition covers the enterprise
Existing plans can remain. A transition applies across the enterprise; it cannot mix the new model with Business or Enterprise seats. Administrators still assign access explicitly.
What you can do
- Compare a full month of existing usage, including allowance-covered activity, before discussing a transition. Open reference ↗
