Claude adds standard traces for agent operations
The OpenTelemetry beta exposes request and tool activity through standard observability integrations.
Why it matters
Teams may be able to investigate agent failures within their existing operational systems.
What to watch
Watch for missing tool spans, access changes and documented overhead as the beta develops.
Still uncertain. Coverage varies by API and SDK path; completeness and production overhead were not tested.
Impact assessment reviewed 2026-10-18.
- Who it helps
- Developers operating Claude-based applications.
- Availability
- Announced October 14. API-side setup requires administrator access; SDK instrumentation has different coverage and setup.
What appears in a trace
A trace groups work; spans describe its steps. API and SDK instrumentation cover different tool paths, so the resulting record must be checked for omissions.
Check coverage with fictional data
Start with metadata mode and a fictional request. Confirm the expected tool steps appear before relying on the trace for incident diagnosis.
What you can do
- Compare API and SDK trace coverage in the documentation, including data-capture defaults. Open reference ↗
Where the evidence stops
Full-content capture can include prompts and responses. Metadata mode still needs a privacy review, and observability storage has its own cost and retention.
