- Who it helps
- Publishers and developers evaluating text provenance and disclosure workflows.
- Availability
- The announcement describes an opt-in API feature for selected models, off by default, and an eligible EU ChatGPT/Codex rollout over coming weeks. Detector access is restricted to approved researchers and expert organizations.
What a detection result means
The marker is a probabilistic signal with false positives and false negatives. Short passages and edits can weaken detection. A result does not verify the text’s truth, identify a user or establish ownership.
Keep those different questions separate in any publishing record: where the text came from, who reviewed it and whether its claims have evidence.
How to record provenance usefully
For an original editorial log, record the tool and model, generation date, reviewed sources, editor changes and final reviewer. These fields remain useful even when a detector is unavailable.
Check the exact model and account availability before promising a watermark-based workflow. Preserve the ordinary review record when the feature is absent.

Where the evidence stops
No detector was accessed and no text-generation account was tested. This explanation does not determine legal compliance or an individual author’s conduct.
